Emergency Preparedness

In your day-to-day living, disasters may seem like a distant possibility. Yet emergencies like floods, tornadoes, chemical spills and power outages can happen at any time.

Like all other municipalities across the province, the City of Kitchener has an emergency plan. The plan outlines how the city and its emergency response agencies will respond to and help the city respond and recover from a large-scale emergency. It outlines roles, responsibilities, procedures and guidelines that will be followed to protect the health and safety of Kitchener residents.

Highlights of the plan

  • During a large-scale emergency the city will have support from regional agencies like the regional police, emergency medical service and public health. Together, these agencies will coordinate an initial response to the emergency.
  • City of Kitchener's Community Control Group including partnering agencies, such as Grand River Hospital, St. Mary's Hospital, Waterloo Region Police Service, Region of Waterloo departments, School Boards, Kitchener-Wilmot Hydro, etc., may be called together to make decisions.
  • The Mayor is ultimately in charge of the emergency and will be the chairman of the Community Control Group. The Mayor may request assistance from the City of Waterloo and neighbouring municipalities.
  • If the City of Kitchener needs more resources to control the emergency, the Mayor will request that the Region of Waterloo activates its emergency plan for assistance.
